HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF BILLIARDS & SNOOKER SECTION

Scribbling down the history of the Billiards & Snooker Section of this Club should have been an easy assignment if the founding fathers were to be around to say a word or two. The Snooker game is one of the oldest games in the Club.

Apparently, Billiards game is being played on the same table. A Table of X-dimension with a given blazers which covers 5 NO4 “X4” thick slate with Rubber cushions at all ends. By the records we could lay our hands on, Snooker stated in 1942 but the first serious snooker competition started in the year 1957 when a shied named MASON SHIELD was presented for competition by H. MASON ESQ.

Since then, the competition has been a yearly affair or staged over the years. Same thing happened to Billiards which records retrieved showed that serious competition started in 1967. Below is a catalogue of past winners of both Snooker & Billiards game.

It is pertinent to mention some of the officers who had managed the Billiards Section so far. Mr. Ogunsole popularly known as father – – law, Engr. Kunle Marinho (Past President & Vice Patron of the Club), Prince ‘Degunle Karunwi, Mr. Duro Osiyemi and Mr. Babatunde Oretade who have served as Chairmen, Captain and Treasurer.

I wish to acknowledge some versatile players like late Chris Adeoye; Francis Olamifihan; Wale Adesina; Mr. Akin Majekodunmi; Dr. Deinde Adeniji; Mr. Oladoyinbo; Justice Bakre; Late J. Osotege; Mr. Osibodu; Late Chief Okewale and the JUNIOR Billiards winners – Mr. Onabajo & Kunle Jones.

It is our hope that the game of Billiards and Snooker will continue to grow from strength to strength as we add another century of the Club.
